Haze blankets Singapore’s skies with a vengeance; NEA’s 24-hour PSI remains moderate

Just a week after Indonesia issued a warning to their neighbours about smog floating across the Malacca Strait, haze has blanketed the skies Singapore right on cue. In time for the weekend too.

Visually, it’s pretty obvious that our hazy days are back with a vengeance. Various districts across the island — the city-centre included — have been shrouded in thick grey mists, while a burning smell was detected in some parts of Singapore this morning.

If you’re referring to the National Environment Agency’s Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) updates, it all looks pretty decent so far. PSI readings over the last 24 hours have fluctuated in the Moderate range at 51-62 as of writing.

If you’re referring to the Real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) however, things look a bit more unsettling. Measurements have reached the level of ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’, with the northern and western parts of Singapore getting the brunt of the haze.

The three-hour PSI has been dramatically increasing too — it’s 111 as of 10am, up from 90 at 8am.

Meanwhile, NEA has promised to issue an advisory soon. It’s looking bad outside right now, but AQICN forecasts that things will clear up by 5pm.
