All three telcos halting sales of Galaxy Note 7 amidst global reports of exploding phones

Garnering great reviews and gaining massive momentum in the smartphone market, Samsung’s newest Galaxy Note 7 took a colossal hit just a few weeks after launching.

Sales have been halted globally, and the gadgets are being recalled. For good reason too — they have an explosive feature. No, like literally, they blow up.

The phone had only been released for two weeks when reports emerged about their flagship phone spontaneously exploding while being charged. The source of the issue points to the phone’s batteries, with some reports saying that it can burst into flames.

It’s a major blow to the South Korean tech giant, which had successfully launched the phone before their rivals Apple released theirs. The new iPhones are expected to be unveiled next week.

“To date (as of September 1) there have been 35 cases that have been reported globally and we are currently conducting a thorough inspection with our suppliers to identify possible affected batteries in the market,” wrote Samsung in their official statement.

“However, because our customers’ safety is an absolute priority at Samsung, we have stopped sales of the Galaxy Note 7. For customers who already have Galaxy Note 7 devices, we will voluntarily replace their current device with a new one over the coming weeks”.

This applies to the Singapore market as well, with the three telcos — Singtel, Starhub, M1 —halting sales of the Galaxy Note 7. Singapore was one of the 10 countries that Samsung picked to launch the handset two weeks ago, and now users who’ve already bought the device will have to take part in an exchange program. The three telcos will keep their customers updated on how to do so.
