While taking a shower in the shared bathroom at one of Nanyang Technological University (NTU)’s Halls of Residence, one student spotted the lens of an iPhone above his cubicle door.
Someone was recording him showering; at one in the morning, no less. George — a second-year School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering student — rushed out to confront the voyeur, but the peeping tom went to hide in another cubicle.
According to The Nanyang Chronicle, the suspect was identified as a 24-year-old current Hall 16 resident, and was promptly accosted by students and campus security personnel. The police were called in as well.
Believed to be a final-year student from the National Institute of Education (i.e. he was training to be a teacher), the peeping tom was said to have attempted to delete the videos while hiding in the bathroom. George and his roommate, however, managed to retrieve them in a folder of deleted items in his phone — all 66 videos of male students showering.
The case is under investigation by the police. Meanwhile, NTU Kaleidoscope — a student group raising awareness on LGBT issues — issued a statement condemning both the incident and the derogatory comments regarding the suspect’s perceived homosexuality.
“Research has shown that there is no causal relationship between one’s sexual orientation and the propensity towards committing sexual assault or harassment,” they wrote. “As such, we caution against individuals making comments regarding the accused party’s sexual orientation in relation to his behaviour.
Surprisingly enough, this wasn’t the first time a case of voyeurism transpired in NTU’s Hall 16. Earlier this year, another student was found to have taken photographs of male residents showering as well.
