2 dead, 1 injured in accident involving 3 e-bikes and a container truck along West Coast Highway

If there’s an incident that should serve as a catalyst for faster implementation of stricter laws on personal mobility devices (PMDs), this would be it. In what seems to be the most horrible accident involving e-bikes so far, two men died while another suffered serious injuries along West Coast Highway.

From what witnesses have posted on Facebook, the accident involved three electric bicycles and a container truck — and pictures show that the bikes stood no chance against the huge lorry. Two of the e-bikes were smashed to smithereens, while the other sustained major damage on its front.

Heads up, some graphic content embedded:

The Singapore Civil Defence Force deployed two ambulances to West Coast Highway at the junction of Pandan Crescent just before midnight yesterday. One casualty was declared dead at the scene; another died from critical injuries later on. The third casualty suffered leg injuries — presumably the rider with the least damaged bike.

West Coast Highway is known for its abundant traffic of  heavy vehicles, with lots of big trucks and trailers utilising the road near the southern shipping ports of Singapore. Though e-bikes are allowed to ply the roads, cyclists have to wear protective helmets and the bikes are only allowed to reach a maximum speed of 25 km/h.
