Local punks visit children’s home to donate a month’s worth of dry goods; shatter stereotypes

When normcore folks see a group of men with studded leather jackets, vibrant mohawks and tattooed knuckles, their reactions are usually negative in nature, already forming a bad impression in their minds of what punks may or may not be.

Too often, people don’t see the other side of the picture — when they’re not attending DIY punk shows or forming moshpits, they forget that these silver-studded punks are a tight-knit community with strong principles. Just like the punks in Yangon who provide meals to people in need, some in our own punk scene also hold charitable causes close to their hearts.

Meet local punks Muhd Hanis and his friends, who recently made their second visit to the PERTAPIS Children’s Home to interact with the kids in need, and brought with them a whole load of dry food (a month’s worth!) as donations.

From pictures posted on Hanis’ Facebook page, it looks like the kids had an amazing time hanging out with the six of them who arrived in their full punk getup. Some of the children even remembered them from their previous visit, and made Hanis and his friends promise to return again soon.

“Sometimes we overlook what we have over the things that we want,” pontificates Hanis in his post. “It is a wonder how someone who has less, could be a lot happier than those who have more.”

Looking forward to organising more similar events in the future, he urged others to make a difference to them too by finding out more on the PERTAPIS Children’s Home website.
