Grab found to be cheaper mode of transport than Uber in Singapore: Price comparison study

In the battle for the cheapest fare between Singapore’s two major ride-hailing apps, online shopping aggregator iPrice has determined the winner — and apparently, it’s Grab.

To nobody’s surprise at all, regular taxis were found to be the most expensive option. Sorry, cabbies.

iPrice’s research compared the costs of transportation between Uber, Grab and local taxis for each country across Southeast Asia. Pitting data for both short and long rides (5km and 20km respectively), the distance and time costs didn’t include surge pricing and discounted fares for fairer calculation.

Uber was found to be the overall winner across the region — it was the cheapest mode of transportation in most Southeast Asian countries, where 20km rides everywhere (except Singapore) cost less than USD 8 (SGD 11.42). In Singapore, Grab won the battle for offering cheaper fares than bitter rivals Uber — though only by a little more than a dollar.

Whether you’re going for a short or long ride, Uber’s cheaper in countries like Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam, while it’s cheaper if you take Grab in the Philippines and Singapore. For all countries, taking a taxi’s way more expensive than either Uber and Grab.

The obvious visual highlight is the fact that Singapore’s the most expensive country in Southeast Asia for transportation, regardless of any service — the cheapest being a 5km Grab ride (USD 1.9) and the most expensive being a 20km taxi ride (USD 16.2). That’s to be expected, of course; Singaporeans are paying the most money around the world to own cars.
