Expand your mind in 2017 with a healthy dose of creativity and inspiration at Singapore Contemporary 2017.

The annual event returns to our island for the second year this month on Jan. 19 – 22 at the Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre. Singapore Contemporary will bring together a vast collection of high-quality, collectable artwork from across Asia and the world in curated sectors, complete with special interactive features.

Exhibitors from over 25 different countries across Asia, Australia, Europe, North and South America are expected to show a vibrant and diverse range of works. Everything from investment-grade art to works by career artists and some of the world’s most promising up-and-coming artists will be on show.

Here are just some of the highlights to look forward to.

PHOTO17 SINGAPORE

Flower Ascendingby Roberto Dutesco, Dayspring Art Gallery, South Korea

We love gazing at photographs, thinking about those amazing moments captured in time, so we can’t wait to see what Photo17 Singapore has in store!

It’s the first curated platform dedicated to photography, demonstrating just how much photography has grown in importance as an artistic medium and collectable art form. Just ask anyone who’s downloaded 17 apps to edit their iPhone photos, we’re sure they’d agree.

Photography is so much more than just snapping a photo – it’s about innovative photo making from conception to final print, creating more than just an image, but a form of art. Photo17 will highlight these new ideas and practices in various forms of photography.

ARTIST DIALOGUES

Singapore Contemporary is about more than just walking through hallways and admiring beautiful paintings, although that sounds like a great afternoon too. No, this event isn’t content to just display art; instead they’re bringing the world of art alive, up close and personal.

The storytellers – local and international artists – will be in-person to chronicle their motivation, inspiration and artistic practice. Live painting demonstrations each day will invite curious viewers into the artists’ private worlds to bear witness to art as it is created and glimpse the processes and techniques artists use to bring their stunning works to life.

CHINA ENCOUNTERS

“Turmoil” by Gao Xiao Yun, China

China Encounters presents a window into the soul of Chinese art for the second year in a row. Selected Chinese galleries, artists and artist collectives, often well known and respected in China but rarely seen overseas, will be exhibited.

Expect bold abstract statements, experimentations with new media, innovative expressions in Chinese ink and plenty of works by emerging artists.

You experience (take part with) the contemporary Chinese perspective, which reinterprets and even challenges traditional Chinese culture and history. New history in the making, you can say!

LATIN AMERICAN VOICES

“Everything Survives” by David Roy, Mexico

Travel to the art scene beyond Asia with this special exhibition showcasing over 25 artists from Latin America. Artists from exotic (to us, at least) places like Peru, Argentina, Cuba, Mexico and Chile have already captured the heart and soul of the Americas. Now, take this unique opportunity to enjoy their artwork right here at home.

FOR THE KIDS

There’s something for everyone at Singapore Contemporary, especially the little ones. And we couldn’t agree more that exposure to art at a young age is a wonderful thing! The world’s next Picasso might just be ready to pick up his first paintbrush (after coming here?).

Kids can take part in a ton of exciting and educational programs, like a hands-on studio, where budding artists can experiment with different mediums.

The Macey & Sons Kids Art Studio, partnering with Little Artists, is a fun place for children from age 3-11 years can try painting, drawing and other art projects. Good news parents! You can join in or leave your little artist extraordinaires for up to an hour of supervised play while you explore the show.

While parents take a break to soak in the art, experienced art teachers, and the acclaimed Italian artist Francesco Lietti, will coach children in the creation of a unique artwork to take home or display at the show.

Fun art tours are another great activity for the family. The Macey & Sons Kids Art Tours, together with Little Artists, will guide curious young minds on a journey of artistic discovery, exploring different artists, styles and media. Children from 5-11 years of age are welcome to join.

All kids programs are complimentary and on a first-come, first-served basis, so hurry before you miss the chance!

COMPLIMENTARY ART TOURS

Ok, ok, kids don’t get all the fun. Singapore Contemporary isn’t leaving out those adventurous adults who want a guided, enriching and diverse tour of the exhibitions.

Complimentary Art Tours feature qualified docents who will lead visitors through a ‘World of Art’, covering many diverse art-related subjects and geographical regions. Topics on the tour include Hidden China, Japan and Korea Revealed, The Art of Southeast Asia and much much more.
