Bukit Batok by-election will be on May 7; Nomination Day on Apr 27

The stage is set for the soul of Bukit Batok after a calamitous end to the political career of David Ong, the former Member of Parliament who allegedly had a saucy extramarital affair with a grassroots volunteer in his constituency.

His resignation left a vacuum of power, leading to a showdown between the replacement nominated by the People’s Action Party (PAP) Murali Pillai and Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) chief Dr Chee Soon Juan. Weeks of intense campaigning (PAP threw in all their big guns) followed without knowing when voting day will be — until now.

President Tony Tan issued the writ of election today, stating that the Bukit Batok by-election will be held on May 7. Nomination day will be on Apr 27, and will be held at Keming Primary School.

It’s just too bad that Ong did what he did and resigned in shame, considering that Bukit Batok residents legitimately liked him. Ong won the seat in last September’s general election, scoring 73.02 percent of the votes against SDP’s Sadasivam Veriyah and independent candidate Samir Salim Neji.

It’s too bad for Bukit Batok residents too, as the upcoming polling day for the by-election is not a public holiday. Employers however will have to allow electors some time off to vote.
