This heartbreaking account by the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) is narrated through a photo gallery on their Facebook page, chronicling their recent operation near The Grandstand mall at Bukit Timah, where a pregnant female macaque monkey was killed in a hit-and-run incident. What makes it all despairing is that the retrieval efforts were made more difficult by an aggressive, grief-stricken alpha male monkey making agitated distress calls with the rest of his pack.
The fate of the simian mother and her unborn infant brings awareness to the dangerous proximity between their natural habitat and our roads, with netizens calling out for the erection of monkey-crossing signs near their dwellings, while others denounce the reckless attitude of Singaporean drivers. All of them express dismay over this preventable tragedy.
