Baihakki Khaizan chides new National Stadium for being #stadiumforconcerts

On Oct. 12, Singapore defender Baihakki Khaizan uploaded a post on his Instagram, a photo of the new and controversial National Stadium in all its retractable roof glory.

Addressing directly the stadium, which features the largest dome structure in the world and is expected to house the much-anticipated Brazil-Japan friendly tonight, the much-loved footballer wrote, “You’re all fancy these days, with all the bells and whistles, but I remember the plain you, and they are wonderful memories.”

Baihakki described how he was made a professional national player — a Lion — in the old Stadium, which also hosted championship games won by the team, the work of sporting legends such as C. Kunalan, James Wong and Glory Barnabas, as well as countless National Day parades.

All the reminiscing was bound to go somewhere and it did — Baihakki said in essence that the new Stadium has a different meaning for him now, if any.

“…I’m not convinced by how you’re behaving now,” he chided. “You don’t seem to know your priorities anymore and I don’t see how new stars will be born in you again.”

He even ‘accused’ the National Stadium, whose current sandy pitch has put Brazil coach Dunga in a state of worry, of selling out: “You’re more about the money, moving in a direction I don’t understand” (apt, since One Direction is holding their world tour there in March). Honestly, I miss the old you.”

The ubiquitous Instagram hashtags — in this case they were #stadiumforconcerts and #$$$ — added to the burn.
