Video: Commuters jostled around like bowling pins on overcrowded MRT platform

An outrageous video went viral on social media yesterday, showing what happens when trains get delayed without warning and MRT platforms get too crowded to even stand in.

Uploaded by The Real Singapore on their Facebook page, the clip sees commuters helplessly squashed into each other, caught unaware of the overcrowded platform at the top of the escalators. It goes on for way too long before MRT staff finally took action and stopped more commuters from getting on the still-moving escalators — which clearly should have been shut down earlier for the safety of those on the platform.

It is unclear exactly which station it is, but The Real Singapore reports that the delays occurred on the East-West Line. The overcrowded platform was due to an earlier train breakdown, when passengers were told to disembark after staying stationary for over 10 minutes. Reportedly, SMRT failed to make any official announcements on social media.

Looks like SMRT will have to step up their game yet again, even after reassurances that more efforts are being put in to avoid these incidents in the first place. As usual, irate netizens extended their wrath in the comments section and blame the government for bringing in too much foreign talent which somehow made the MRT platform overcrowded.
