Transporter of curry puffs and kuehs charged with reckless driving

The man who ignored instructions for further inspection and sped through Tuas checkpoint with curry puffs and kuehs was charged with one count of committing a rash act endangering human life or personal safety of others today.

According to Channel NewsAsia, 47-year-old Mohamed Dawood R M Abdul Sukkur exceeded the confined security checkpoint area’s speed limit of 15km/h when he drove his BMW at a speed of 142km/h, and had not given a hoot about traffic conditions and the presence of human traffic in the area. He must’ve thought he was starring in a Fast & Furious film.

On Tuesday, after clearing immigration when he drove through the checkpoint from Malaysia into Singapore, Dawood proceeded to the customs red channel to declare the foodstuffs he was importing from Malaysia, during which discrepancies in the quantities of food declared were found. He was then directed by immigration officers to a designated inspection bay for further checks, but he drove off instead of stopping.

In what must’ve been a slow-mo version of a car chase that’s usually on TV, the police tracked down the car along Pioneer Road North just after 2pm and Dawood was subsequently arrested. Police investigations are still ongoing and more charges may be tendered against him, said the prosecution.

Dawood will next appear in court on Jul 14 at 9.30am, while his bail amount has been extended at S$10,000. This offence could earn Dawood a six-month jail term, a fine of S$2,500, or both. No amount of curry puffs or kuehs sold can get him out of this one.
