Hong Kong college students call out for Amos Yee’s release in rally near Singapore consulate

Is there some kind of regional movement valiantly protesting the plight of Amos Yee? Just days after a demonstration in support of the infamous 16-year-old blogger was held in Taiwan, college students in Hong Kong have similarly held a protest near the Singapore consulate yesterday, urging for the teen’s release.

Over 50 students from universities such as Hong Kong University, Chinese University of Hong Kong and more gathered near Admiralty Centre at 18 Harcourt Road, where they handed a letter of protest to Howard Fu, Vice Consul-General of Singapore to Hong Kong.

The student activist group Scholarism also condemned the Singaporean government for remanding Yee, who’s currently in the Institute of Mental Health pending a psychiatric report

“The Singaporean government detained a teenager because of one video. This only shows Singapore, a so-called modernised society, fails to allow dissidents and different voices,” the South China Morning Post reported them to say.

In a post on their Facebook page, the group explained why they’re interested in Yee’s case in the first place.

“As a student organization, Scholarism has long been in the stand for underage persons’ human rights, freedom of thought and freedom of speech. Today, we see a young person, like us, voicing against the elite in society, under such unbearable pain and outrageous infringement of rights.”

“Scholarism undoubtedly demands the immediate release of Yee, backed by our solid belief that every individual is born with autonomy, as well as the right to express opinions based on independent thought.”
