National Gallery Singapore opens to public today; free admission to all till Dec 6

After a decade of waiting, the historic doors of the former Supreme Court Building and City Hall have finally reopened to the public as the nation’s newest museum: the National Gallery Singapore.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was on site last night to unveil the $532-million gallery dedicated to the art of Singapore and Southeast Asia, displaying exhibits dating back to the 19th century. It’s been called the  largest public collection of regional modern art, with about 800 works on display.

Around 500 guests — including artists, donors and community leaders — were treated to a sneak preview.

As part of the museum’s opening celebrations, the public will enjoy free admission to their permanent galleries for two weeks till Dec 6. There’ll also be an Art Carnival at the Padang which kicks off on Friday and runs through the weekend.
