Woman left on life support after accident with electric scooter; family considers pulling the plug

53-year-old housewife Ang Liu Kiow was out shopping for groceries in a regular Saturday routine when she met with an accident involving an electric scooter.

Circumstances of how the accident unfolded along Pasir Ris Drive 1 are unconfirmed, reported The New Paper. What was clear was the devastating crash — the housewife lost consciousness in the ambulance on the way to Changi General Hospital and has not woken up since.

Things took a turn for the worse at the hospital, where she had to undergo immediate surgery due to a blood clot, and another operation to drain out the build-up of brain fluid.

Now heavily sedated and on life support, Ang’s loved ones will have to make the decision whether to pull the plug in the next two days.

Ang’s son, 22-year-old Wilson Leong, believes that the e-scooter crashed into her that fateful Saturday. A witness had seen five youths tending to Ang after the accident, with the rider believed to be among them, considering there was a big e-scooter on the ground nearby.

The police have classified the case as a rash act causing grievous hurt and arrested the 17-year-old electric scooter rider.

Adding to the pains of the victim’s family is the fact that it might be difficult to claim compensation in accidents involving personal mobility devices such as hoverboards, electric bicycles and unicycles, according to lawyers.

Enhanced measures to enforce safe usage of the devices will only kick in by year end, but that provides no comfort to Ang and her grieved family. “…when the time comes, if needed, we want to let her go peacefully”, says Leong. “We can’t bear to see her suffer any more.”
