This Bukit Timah locale is a clean eater’s mecca. It’s got a full-fledged cafe, Living Cafe & Deli, which offers healthy dishes that centre around the raw and plant-based diet. However, there are plenty of foods which aren’t part of a raw vegan’s diet, such as the Pumpkin Seed Crusted Seabass ($24) and the Chicken Burger with aioli and cashew mayo ($16). On the second floor you’ll find a small offering of health supplies such as organic condiments, essential oils, health supplements, and a hodgepodge of homeopathic remedies. If you’re ready to take it to the next level, book an appointment for a health consultation to assess your current condition and get your body back on track with three, seven or ten day supervised detox programs.

Hounds of the Baskervilles

What it’s got: A barbershop, tattoo and piercing parlour, and a selection of men’s grooming supplies for sale

If you’ve spotted a lad with an achingly retro and deftly pomade-d do, it’s more than likely the work of Hounds of the Baskervilles owner, Feroze McLeod, or a member of his gang of bad-boy barbers. This man-cave is hiply outfitted with retro barbershop chairs and framed vintage illustrations while rock music blares from the speakers. This place will make even the coolest kid feel dowdy.  Come in for a dapper cut (from $25) or old-school shave ($20) and take home not-your-run-off-the-mill grooming products such as McLeod & Son Pomade, Triumph & Disaster Old Fashioned Shave Cream and Hawleywood’s Grooming Spray before you dash out. If a sharp cut and shave won’t do it, level up your look with a piercing or a tattoo.

House at Dempsey

What it’s got: A restaurant, spa, waxing and nail salon, eyebrow grooming, florist, and a selection of beauty products for sale

Spa Esprit’s extensive portfolio of food and beauty businesses are on full display at House. Owner Cynthia Chua’s creative projects take up an entire level of this massive WWII barrack which fronts a patch of soothing Dempsey wilderness. The restaurant, House, serves fresh and inspired fare, including a selection of sister restaurant, Skinny Pizza’s best sellers. The Truffle Fries ($12) and the One-Metre-Long Sausage ($28) are must orders here. The opposite end of the building is dedicated to Chua’s beauty enterprises. There’s Strip (for nails and waxing), Spa Esprit (for massages and facials), Browhaus (for eyebrow grooming), Beauty Emporium (for cult beauty products from the likes of SCO, Malin+Goetz and REN), and a florist.

Eight young brands with differing design perspectives congregate at PACT, a massive sparsely decorated industrial space located in the centre of Orchard Road. This cool collective who occupy a  whopping 7,500 square feet at the otherwise lethargic Orchard Central aim to “change the local retail landscape by challenging and reinventing traditional notions of retail in Singapore”. We appreciate that the offerings here aren’t curated to fit to a specific style. There’s a Japanese hair salon (pact+LIM); a Japanese nail salon (kiyone+PACT); semi-precious jewelry designed by a vibrant Colombian (Killari); philosophical and simple lifestyle products (SPUR Hauswerks); quirky furnishings and homeware (Fred Lives Here); sumptuous artisanal fragrances (code deco); minimalistic and comfy fashion basics (sifr); as well as a hip cafe and bar (Kilo).

The General Company

What it’s got: Handcrafted fashion accessories, home décor, art, and craft workshops

Amidst a climate of factory-made and disposable products, The General Company does things differently. This Jalan Besar establishment is more than just a retail store, it’s a catalyst for the local craft movement. They give emerging artisans a platform to sell their wares and conduct workshops for pedestrians to learn craft. For sale are somewhat pricey items such as HYGGE watches, Lullaby sunglasses, and Oldman bowties. However there are lots of accessibly-priced and locally-designed pieces like retro biscuit tins; earrings made from old vinyls; and cotton totes with ice cream sandwiches, huat kueh and ice popsicles silkscreened on. If you’re pining to take your love of craft to the next level, you can sign up for one of The General Company’s numerous workshops where you can learn to silkscreen, arrange flowers, bind books, build your own terrarium, make shoes for babies… the list goes on, the folk here are really creative.
